FASTag / FASTag implementation deadline extended for another 30 days - rules relaxed - all you need to know !!

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has announced today that the deadline for the implemenation of FASTag as mandatory has been extended by 30 days. National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), had requested MoRTH that an extension be provided as there were still a lot of people who have not been able to get their FASTag due to shortage of FASTag from all the FASTag service provider banks. 

According NHAI, as of Dec 6, 2019 the total sales of FASTag across the country was about 1.96 lakhs. Whereas, the total production capacity of FASTag by all the FASTag manufacturers is about 30 to 50,000 per day. The present inventory of FASTags acrose banks is about 18 lakhs. A meeting was convened with the tag manufacturers on Dec 5th, 2019 and with the acuqiring banks on Dec 9th, 2019. 

The chip used in the manufacture of RFID tags has to be imported and there is a lead time of about six weeks to get them. Becuase of this lead time and the production capacity, market will have a supply deficit of FASTags. 

All you need to know about the extension of FASTag deadline !

• 75% of Fee lanes in Toll Plaza are to kept as FASTag only Fee lanes
• 25% of the Fee Lanes in Toll Plazas to be kept as Hybrid Lanes - where both cash and FASTag are accepted. What this means is that if there are 4 lanes, then one lane will be a hybrid lane where cash is accepted, the remaining lanes will be FASTag only lanes. If there are 8 lanes, then the toll plaza can have two lanes as hybrid lanes where cash will be accepted along with FASTag. 
• Entering into FASTag only lanes will not incurr a penalty. For the next 30 days, to not inconvenience users, going into FASTag only lanes will not inccur a penalty of double of toll charges. 
• Toll Plazas can use their discretion to set the number of lanes which will be hybrid - that will also accept cash. 
• The rules have been relaxed for a period of 30 days, during which the penalty of double to toll charge will not be collected. 
• Toll Plazas should make the extra hybrid lanes as FASTag only lanes within 45 days from Dec 15, 2019.
